Little Dorrit, Chapter 1 summary

What happens

1. Under fierce August heat, Marseilles shelters a dark, filthy prison where Rigaud dominates his fellow prisoner, Cavalletto.
2. The jailer and his young daughter deliver unequal meals and announce Rigaud's trial at one o'clock.
3. Rigaud treats his refusal to work as proof of gentility, while Cavalletto serves him and accepts small gifts.
4. Rigaud describes his marriage, admits striking his wife, and claims she throws herself from a height during their quarrel.
5. Soldiers escort a terrified Rigaud out under protection from a hostile crowd, while Cavalletto strains to hear what happens.
6. After the uproar fades, Cavalletto sleeps on the bench, and evening settles over the city and sea.

What to notice

Rigaud makes domination central to his self-defense. His words connect his treatment of Cavalletto with his account of conflict over his wife's property and independence.
