Antagonist

Literary term · say it an-TAG-uh-nist

An antagonist is a character or force that stands against the main character, called the protagonist. This opposition creates conflict by blocking what the protagonist wants or needs, but an antagonist does not have to be evil.

Ways an antagonist appears

An opposing character

One person works against the protagonist's goals, safety, or happiness. The opposition may be open or hidden.

In Othello, Iago leads Othello to believe that Desdemona is unfaithful. His schemes turn Othello against his innocent wife.

In Othello by William Shakespeare

A group or society

A community, institution, or set of social rules can oppose the protagonist. The pressure may come from many people rather than one enemy.

In The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne faces public shame and must wear a scarlet letter as punishment for adultery. Her Puritan community's judgment shapes her daily life.

In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne

A force of nature

Weather, wilderness, or other natural conditions can act as an antagonist. Such forces create obstacles without having motives or making moral choices.

In Robinson Crusoe, a violent storm wrecks Crusoe's ship and leaves him stranded on an island. He must find food and shelter to survive.

In Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe

How to spot an antagonist

  1. Identify the main character and what they want.
  2. Look for the person or force blocking that goal.
  3. Follow how this opposition creates conflict.

What is the difference between an antagonist and a villain?

An antagonist opposes the protagonist, while a villain does seriously harmful or evil things. The roles often overlap, but not always. An honest detective can be the antagonist in a story whose protagonist is a criminal.

Can a story have more than one antagonist?

A story can have several antagonists, each creating a different obstacle for the protagonist. One character might threaten the protagonist directly, while a community's rules block another goal. Their opposition can occur together or at different points in the plot.
