What happens
- Marius recognizes that the Jondrettes are preparing an ambush and resolves to save M. Leblanc and the young woman.
- He rejects waiting outside to warn M. Leblanc because Jondrette’s men could seize him before the intended victim arrives.
- With five hours remaining, Marius dresses and quietly leaves while Jondrette’s wife searches through old iron.
- Near Rue du Petit-Banquier, he overhears two hidden men discussing Patron-Minette, money, imprisonment, and a waiting carriage.
- Suspecting a connection with the ambush, he asks for a police commissioner and receives the address 14 Rue de Pontoise.
- After buying a roll, Marius reflects that giving the Jondrette girl money enables him to discover the danger.
