In Chapter 4, Jean Valjean seeks a hiding place for himself and Cosette beside a gloomy building, but weak drainpipes, barred windows, and exposure prevent him from climbing inside. He then examines two apparent entrances in a sheltered recess and discovers that one cannot be forced and the other merely covers a wall.
What happens
- The narrator describes the building and sheltered recess at the meeting of Droit-Mur lane and Rue Polonceau.
- Jean Valjean hopes the apparently empty building can shelter him and Cosette.
- He seats Cosette beside a stone post and examines drainpipes, but their weakness, barred windows, and moonlight defeat his climbing plan.
- He returns to the hidden recess and hopes to enter a garden through one of two apparent doors.
- The carriage gate resists entry, while the larger apparent door proves to be wooden covering over masonry.
