In Chapter 238, Sir Tristram refuses to give King Arthur his name, defeats him and Sir Uwaine in jousts, and leaves Arthur acknowledging their pride. While searching unsuccessfully for Sir Launcelot, Tristram finds nine knights attacking one man, whom he suspects is Sir Palamides, and promises to help against Breuse Sance Pité.

What happens

  2. Arthur challenges Tristram, who protests that he is already tired but accepts and knocks Arthur down, dangerously wounding his left side.
  3. Sir Uwaine attacks to defend Arthur, but Tristram unhorses him too, and Arthur admits that pride drives their challenges.
  4. Tristram rides away seeking news of Sir Launcelot and grieves because he cannot learn whether Launcelot lives.
  5. Near a tower, Tristram sees nine knights fighting one skilled knight and suspects from his shield that he is Sir Palamides.
  6. Tristram condemns the unequal fight and promises aid when the attackers’ leader, Breuse Sance Pité, tells him to leave.
