In Chapter 2, Uther Pendragon promises Merlin custody of his future child with Igraine and enters her castle disguised as her husband, who dies during an attack. Uther then marries Igraine, while further marriages and Morgan le Fay’s education extend the chapter’s account of royal families.
What happens
- Ulfius brings news of Merlin, who secures Uther’s sworn promise to surrender his future child with Igraine.
- Merlin arranges disguises for Uther, Ulfius, and himself so they can enter Tintagil Castle.
- The duke attacks the king’s army and dies before Uther reaches Igraine in her husband’s likeness.
- Uther leaves before daybreak; Igraine hears when her husband dies and privately wonders who visits her.
- The barons seek reconciliation, Ulfius proposes marriage, and Uther and Igraine marry with public celebration.
