Le Morte Darthur, Chapter 143 summary

In Chapter 143, Dame Liones keeps Sir Gareth’s location secret and proposes a tournament through which King Arthur can hear of him. Linet restores Gareth’s strength, allies gather at the castle, and many distinguished knights choose to oppose Arthur while Gareth accepts only an ordinary knight’s role.

What happens

  1. Arthur sends for Dame Liones after advisers discourage Sir Gawaine and his brothers from searching for Gareth.
  2. Gareth asks Liones to conceal his location and suggest a tournament with prizes for the best knight.
  3. Liones visits Arthur, refuses to identify Gareth’s location, and arranges a tournament against Arthur’s knights.
  4. Back on the Isle of Avilion, Linet treats Gareth’s wounds and restores his strength.
  5. Sir Persant and Sir Ironside assemble their forces, and announcements invite knights to choose either side.
  6. Many prominent knights join the castle’s party, while Gareth chooses the standing of an ordinary knight.
