Hyperion, Part 4, Chapter 2 summary

Part 4, Chapter 2 of 40 · 10 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 2, Paul Flemming travels with Berkley, remains absorbed in disappointed love, and refuses to blame the woman who does not love him. Their conversation gives way to a violent storm, a frightening dream, and a visit to Maximilian’s tomb, while the narrator urges endurance rather than escape from sorrow.

What happens

  1. The narrator praises patient endurance and argues that accepting sorrow strengthens a person more than seeking distraction.
  2. Flemming travels without enjoying the scenery, while the absent woman occupies his thoughts and dreams.
  3. Berkley jokes about happiness and quotes a dismissive love song, but Flemming insists that the lady deserves no blame.
  4. A thunderstorm overtakes the carriage as village priests and peasants pray beside a crucifix.
  5. Flemming wakes to an alarming dream voice near a churchyard and reflects on souls traveling together after death.
  6. After reaching Innsbruck, the travelers visit Maximilian’s tomb and the gardens, then continue toward Salzburg.
