Worum es in diesem Buch geht
A man walks through a green forest, loses the path, and is blown onto a narrow track he cannot leave. He joins a company of old scholars, kills their lion, and guards two lovers in a glass prison. Then a king rises and leads him into a land of treasure. What on earth is this story about?
Herbert Silberer, a Viennese student of dreams who died in 1923, asks that question in Hidden Symbolism of Alchemy and the Occult Arts. He reads an old alchemical parable three ways: as a dream, as a chemical recipe, and as a guide to the inner life.

Punkt 1 von 8
A strange parable is the starting point
Silberer begins with a story he found in a Rosicrucian book printed around 1785.
The narrator strolls through a forest, grieving over the fall of Adam and Eve, and a strong wind pushes him onto a narrow, overgrown path. He cannot turn back. He arrives at a meadow where elders with beards gray as ice debate a great secret hidden in nature. They admit him on one condition. He must learn to know their lion and subdue it. He seizes the beast and forces out its blood. He finds red blood and white bones inside, and is told he must bring the lion back to life.
A bridal pair is locked in a crystal chamber, and the narrator guards it through a winter. The lovers melt into water, rot, and are washed white again. A queen rises, and her brother the king takes the narrator into his kingdom of gold and health.
The author calls it a parable, yet it reads like a dream. That puzzle drives the whole book. The lesson is to treat a strange story as a puzzle with a method, not as nonsense.
That’s 1 of 8 key points.

Questions about Verborgene Symbolik der Alchemie und der okkulten Künste
What is Hidden Symbolism of Alchemy and the Occult Arts about?
It examines an old alchemical parable and reads it three ways, as a dream, as a chemical process and as a spiritual path. Along the way it explains dream theory, alchemy, Rosicrucians, freemasonry and mysticism.
What is the parable of the wanderer and the lion?
It is an anonymous tale from a Rosicrucian book printed around 1785. A wanderer enters a meadow of scholars, kills their lion, guards two lovers in a crystal chamber, and finally meets a king.
What did the alchemists mean by the philosopher's stone?
In Silberer's account it is both a material goal and a symbol. For the best alchemists it stood for the refined person, a soul made pure and joined to God, not merely gold made from lead.
When was the book written and what is its original title?
Silberer wrote it in German in the early 1910s. The English translation by Smith Ely Jelliffe appeared in 1917 as Problems of Mysticism and Its Symbolism and was reissued in 1971 under the present title.
Is the book worth reading today?
It shows how one image can carry several meanings and gathers rich material from alchemy, myth, dream study and mysticism. Readers interested in symbolism, Jungian ideas or the history of the occult find much to follow.
