Flatland, Section 10: Zusammenfassung

Section 10 von 22 · Part 1: This World · Lesezeit für section: 6 Min.

In Section 10, a marriage secured through false colouring turns Women against the Colour Bill, and Pantocyclus uses apparent surrender to trap the reformers in an assembly massacre. The Circles then enforce their victory through executions, inspections, and strict controls that reserve knowledge and use of Colour for a privileged few.

Was geschieht

  1. Three years of agitation bring military defeats and household killings that threaten the Circles’ power.
  2. An Isosceles disguises himself with colours and deceives a noble orphan into marriage; her suicide turns Women against reform.
  3. Pantocyclus announces acceptance of the Bill, then uses a long speech to weaken support among other classes and Workmen.
  4. At a planned signal, Convicts kill Chromatistes, Women attack the soldiers, and blocked exits help turn panic into mutual slaughter.
  5. The Circles kill a tenth of the Working Men and conduct extensive inspections and executions among the lower classes.
  6. Colour becomes forbidden, with limited privileged exceptions, and its manufacture remains secret through the annual killing of factory workers.
