Punkt 1 von 8

A rumor of water fills the clearing

The story opens with an argument, but its real subject is a crowd. Sheriff Bart McKenzie wants old Dave Budd to wear a deputy's badge, and Budd wants nothing to do with it. He calls himself a fat old man whose fighting days are past. McKenzie points out that they are the same age, and that forty-eight is not old.

Behind their quarrel lies a clearing full of strangers. They come in farm wagons, buggies and pack trains, and they camp in front of Budd's store among baggage and campfires. The cause is a thin rumor that the government will dam a distant river and dig canals to water the dry land of central Oregon. Budd knows that rumors have an ugly habit of dying, yet the families keep coming.

McKenzie does not listen. He fastens the badge to Budd's vest and explains the trouble. Money has been disappearing from wagons after dark. He points out a young redheaded man with a scowl who hangs around the camp. Budd chuckles. He thinks a girl, not money, keeps the young man there.

A crowd of dreamers carries its savings in its wagons. That is the soil in which a thief, or a false suspicion, can grow.

Hope draws a crowd, and a crowd draws trouble.

That’s 1 of 8 key points.
