Chapter 35 of 71 · Book 5: Mordecai · 46 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 35, Gwendolen’s strained manner and sudden appeal for sympathy deepen Deronda’s concern about her marriage, though he resolves to avoid private conversation with her. She seeks another chance to speak, but he leaves her alone in the library before joining the household’s tour of the Abbey.

What happens

  1. Before dinner, Deronda wonders how marriage affects Gwendolen and suspects that poverty helps explain her choice of Grandcourt.
  2. Gwendolen arrives wearing diamonds, maintains a cool manner, and jokes about fearing Deronda’s disapproval during dinner.
  3. After the music, she gives Deronda a sorrowful look and questions him about hatred and deliberate injury.
  4. Deronda cannot concentrate on Hebrew and resolves not to seek private conversations with Gwendolen.
  5. Gwendolen hurries to the library hoping to speak with him, but he leaves after noticing her.
  6. During the house tour, Sir Hugo defends mixed architectural styles, while Deronda challenges an argument based on absurd extremes.
