A reckless boy finds one believer in Kiyo
The book opens with a list of the narrator's failures, and he tells it almost with pride. As a boy he jumps from a second-floor window because a classmate calls him a coward. He ruins a neighbor's carrot patch by wrestling on it. His father says he is no good, and his mother cannot hide her worry.
His mother favors his older brother, a pale boy who studies English to become a businessman. The two fight about once every ten days. Once the narrator smashes a chess piece against his brother's forehead, and his father threatens to cut him out of the family.
Only the maid Kiyo pleads for him. She loves the boy blindly. She brings him sweets and hot noodles at night, and she lends him three yen. He promises to pay her back and never does. She calls him Master Darling and tells him he will one day live in a house with a grand entrance. He does not believe her, yet her faith in him slowly starts to matter.
After his parents die, his brother sells the house and hands over six hundred yen. The narrator spends it on three years at a physics school. Then he accepts a post teaching mathematics in Shikoku. At the station, Kiyo says this may be their last goodbye, and from the train window she looks very small.
Being loved without reason is the strength the narrator carries into every strange place.
