Für wen es gedacht ist

Readers who enjoy short stories steeped in place, gentle humor, old-fashioned romance and unfolding secrets will love this collection. It suits those drawn to quiet portraits of Quakers, farmers, dreamers and rulers.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Picture a prince who raises a red flag over his castle so that a whole town must fall silent while he naps. Anyone who breaks the silence might be whipped, or might be paid ten rubles for a fine voice. That is Alexis of Kinesma, ruler in the first tale of this book.

Bayard Taylor was an American poet, traveler and diplomat who died in 1878. He gathers nine very different stories here, set on the Volga, on Quaker farms, in a button maker's villa and in a state legislature. Each asks what happens when people hide who they are, or love someone they are told they must not. You get sharp comedy, tender romance and a little mystery.

Punkt 1 von 10

A prince rules his town by whip and flag

Prince Alexis of Kinesma owns the bodies of ten thousand serfs on the Volga. A huge red sleep flag on the castle tells the whole town to stop every noise while the prince naps. Nobody argues with any of it.

One afternoon the prince spots a merchant who slipped away from his dinner. He chases the man through the bazaar with a whip until the merchant wades chin-deep into an icy pond and will not come out. The prince follows and swears on the saints that he will do no harm. Soon the two walk back up the street as friends.

His justice is just as wild. When a cloth seller cheats a serf's wife, Alexis takes over the shop and sells everything at a loss. When a serf takes the blame for a song that broke his sleep, he is rewarded with ten rubles for his voice. No one can guess which Alexis will appear on a given day.

Absolute power makes a man unpredictable, and everyone around him learns to read his face.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

The Beast is Prince Alexis of Kinesma, a rich, fearsome ruler who owns ten thousand serfs and rules them by whip and temper. The Beauty is Helena, the music teacher's daughter who marries his son Boris.

What does A. C. stand for in The Experiences of the A. C.?

A. C. stands for the Arcadian Club, a group of friends in Norridgeport who rent a summer house on Long Island Sound. They hope to live in harmony with nature and speak with total candor, and they agree to use only the initials.

No. It is a comic fictional letter set in an imagined state called Atlantic. Through Jane Strongitharm's proud voice, Taylor imagines what might follow if women gained full political rights, and he pokes fun at both sides.

What themes link the tales in this book?

Most of the stories ask who a person really is and what happens when love meets class, faith, family or disguise. The tales mix humor, tenderness and mystery, and many turn on a moment when one person truly recognizes another.
