About E. M. Forster

E. M. Forster (1879-1970) was an English novelist and essayist, celebrated for his subtle, humane fiction about class, hypocrisy, and the difficulty of genuine human connection. His famous motto, 'Only connect,' captures the heart of his work — the longing to bridge the divides between people. His major novels include A Room with a View, a warm romance and social comedy set partly in Italy; Howards End, a searching study of class and English society; and A Passage to India, his masterpiece, exploring the tensions of British colonial rule. His fiction combines gentle irony with deep moral seriousness. Forster wrote most of his novels early in a long life, then turned largely to essays and criticism. A quiet, thoughtful liberal, he championed tolerance, honesty, and personal relationships above all.
