Worum es in diesem Buch geht
What would you do if your ship caught fire at midnight, a day short of home, with the nearest shore miles away across a dark sea? That is the question put to two fifteen-year-old cousins, Elwood Brandon and Howard Lawrence, and to their Irish guardian, Tim O'Rooney.
Edward Sylvester Ellis wrote Adrift in the Wilds for young readers. The boys sail from New York to see their parents in San Francisco. Their steamer burns, and they reach a shore with no road, no town and no food. They have a Newfoundland dog named Terror, a great deal of luck, and Tim's endless jokes.

A dream on deck becomes a burning ship
Three passengers sit apart from the crowd. They are Elwood Brandon and Howard Lawrence, cousins born less than a month apart, and Tim O'Rooney, a burly Irishman sent east to bring the boys home for the summer.
The boys look alike and love each other like brothers, but they differ in temper. Elwood is bold and acts on his first thought. Howard is more careful and weighs what might go wrong. That difference drives much of the story.
On deck, Tim tells a strange dream. He saw the steamer on fire and the passengers drowning far out at sea. The boys laugh it off. Then Tim looks toward the bow, sees smoke and a flicker of flame, and says his dream is coming true.
Trouble arrives when everyone feels safe.
That’s 1 of 11 key points.
