Für wen es gedacht ist

Readers who like sharp economic argument with real numbers, and anyone curious how a famous economist turned the chaos of the early 1920s into plain practical advice.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

What happens to a country when its money stops meaning what it meant last year? In Moscow, a grocer sells a pound of cheese and runs to the market to buy cheese again before his roubles lose value on the way. In Vienna, a prudent man orders a second mug of beer with the first, in case the price rises while he drinks.

A Tract on Monetary Reform was written by John Maynard Keynes and finished in October 1923. He shows what unstable money does to people, explains how money and exchange rates work, and offers a plan for managing them. You get the argument in clear steps, told with wit and bite.

Punkt 1 von 10

Changing money matters because it falls unevenly

Keynes begins with a simple point. Money matters only for what it can buy. A man who got twice as much money for his work and paid twice as much for his purchases would be entirely unaffected.

So a change in the price level matters only because it hits people unequally. A wage may lag behind the cost of bread, while a merchant's stock gains value overnight. Wealth passes from some people to others, plans fail, and hopes are disappointed.

The swings are now huge. Germany reached 765,000 percent of its 1913 price level by 1923. Keynes names two evils. Inflation does its worst harm to the distribution of wealth, and deflation does its worst harm to production and jobs. Unstable money matters because it moves wealth between people without anyone choosing it.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Ein Traktat über Währungsreform

What is A Tract on Monetary Reform about?

It examines how changes in the value of money affect savers, business people and workers, how governments tax through inflation, how money and exchange rates work, and what policy should do to keep prices stable.

What does Keynes mean by calling the gold standard a barbarous relic?

He means that central banks already steer credit to keep prices, business and employment steady. Fixing gold at one price per ounce is an old rule that no longer fits those aims.

What is the difference between inflation and deflation in the book?

Inflation means more money to spend than goods to buy, so prices rise and savers lose. Deflation means a shrinking supply of money, so prices fall, business slows and jobs disappear.

When was A Tract on Monetary Reform written?

Keynes finished it in October 1923. He drew on articles he published in 1922 in the Manchester Guardian and wrote against the backdrop of the German, Austrian and Russian inflations.

Is A Tract on Monetary Reform worth reading today?

It offers clear reasoning on inflation, central banks and exchange rates, backed by vivid cases from Germany, Russia and France. It also shows the early thinking of an economist who later changed policy.
