Chapter 10 of 19 · 16 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 10, Sara accepts sixpence from a kindly child, finds comfort in small friendships, and breaks down when her doll cannot answer her distress. The arrival of a wealthy, unhappy man next door gives her a new interest, especially because his furnishings remind her of India.

What happens

  1. Rare visits from friends leave Sara lonely, and her shabby clothes make her feel painfully different from her former self.
  2. Donald mistakes Sara for a needy child and gives her sixpence, which she accepts to spare his feelings.
  3. The Large Family becomes interested in Sara, while she wears the coin and finds comfort in children, birds, and rats.
  4. Exhausted and denied supper, Sara knocks Emily down in anger, then picks her up and apologizes.
  5. Rich furnishings arrive next door, and their Indian designs make Sara feel hopeful about the newcomers.
  6. Becky reports that the new neighbor is wealthy and ill; weeks afterward, servants carry the unhappy man into his house.
