The plot in six lines

In Beldover, Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen question marriage, then attend a wedding where they notice Rupert Birkin and Gerald Crich.

Birkin's relationship with Hermione Roddice breaks down when she strikes and injures him, sharpening his wish for love involving both body and mind.

Ursula and Birkin argue over love and independence, while Gerald imposes mechanical order on the mines and draws Gudrun into an attraction shaped by power.

As Gudrun and Gerald struggle for control, Birkin seeks a bond with Gerald as serious as marriage, but Gerald holds back despite their intimate wrestling.

The two couples travel to the snowy Alps and meet the sculptor Loerke, towards whom Gudrun turns as she draws away from Gerald.

Gerald wanders into the mountains and dies in the snow, leaving Birkin grieving and still longing, despite his bond with Ursula, for love with a man as well.

Themes

Love and freedom: Ursula and Birkin test whether love can bring two people together without making either surrender an independent self.

Power and control: Gerald's command of the mines echoes his relationship with Gudrun, where desire becomes a contest neither wants to lose.

Body and mind: Birkin's break with Hermione exposes the limits of knowledge without feeling and strengthens his search for love involving the whole person.

Industrial society: The efficient mines and guarded social gatherings suggest a world where money, machinery and class leave little room for warmth.

Male intimacy: Birkin's wish for a lasting bond with Gerald asks whether love between a man and a woman can meet every need.
