Part 6-resumé af Utopia

Part 6 af 9 · 29 min. til at læse part

In Of Utopians’ Travels, the speaker describes regulated travel, shared supplies, foreign trade, and customs that strip precious metals of prestige. He then explains how the Utopians connect happiness with reasonable, harmless pleasure, before describing their learning, their study of Greek, and their development of printing from visitors’ instructions.

Hvad sker der?

  1. Travel requires permission, and visitors must work during extended stays; unauthorized travel brings punishment and, for a second offense, slavery.
  2. Towns share supplies, export surpluses, and accumulate wealth used chiefly for war, while gold serves degrading purposes at home.
  3. Anemolian ambassadors expect admiration for their ornaments but abandon them after discovering that Utopians associate such display with disgrace.
  4. The Utopians ground happiness in natural, honorable pleasure, rejecting luxury, cruelty, and pleasures that harm others.
  5. They prize mental pleasures and bodily health, rejecting needless self-denial unless it benefits others.
  6. The speaker describes their productive farming, rapid acquisition of Greek, valued books, and successful experiments in papermaking and printing.
