Who Doctor Moreau is
Doctor Moreau is a tall, white-haired surgeon whose island laboratory hides painful experiments on living animals. He uses surgery, grafting and prolonged treatment to give animals human form.
His creations, the Beast People, speak and walk upright, but their animal instincts remain beneath the surface. His calm explanations contrast with the suffering that Edward Prendick hears behind a locked door.
What Doctor Moreau wants
Moreau pursues knowledge through a cold curiosity rather than a wish to help others. He treats pain as something that can be set aside in the pursuit of scientific understanding.
When his creatures fail to remain as he shapes them, he sees a technical problem rather than a warning. The island lets him continue his work far from critics and outside checks.
Doctor Moreau and the others in the story
Prendick is horrified by Moreau's methods, but depends on the men who control the island's only boat. Moreau explains his purpose without accepting that his experiments are wrong.
The Beast People live under a Law intended to restrain their animal instincts. Their rules rest on fear and the authority of their maker, whom they regard as a god.
A best-known line
“The study of Nature makes a man at last as remorseless as Nature.”
