Who Gérard de Villefort is

Gérard de Villefort is Marseille's deputy prosecutor in The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, with collaborator Auguste Maquet. He is young, ambitious and about to marry well when Edmond Dantès is brought before him. At first, he treats the young sailor kindly and believes his account of events.

What Gérard de Villefort wants

Villefort wants to protect his career and family name from a dangerous political connection. The letter Edmond carries is addressed to Noirtier, Villefort's father, whose Bonapartist past threatens his son's advancement. Villefort burns the letter, then sends Edmond to the Château d'If without a trial.

Gérard de Villefort and the others in the story

Edmond trusts Villefort's authority and thinks the destruction of the letter is meant to help him. That trust makes their encounter a sharp contrast between apparent kindness and deliberate injustice. Unlike Edmond's jealous rivals, Villefort knows he is sacrificing an innocent man to protect himself.

Later, Villefort is the king's prosecutor in Paris, with secrets and tensions within his household. His daughter Valentine is gentle, while his second wife is cold and ambitious. His position places him close to the novel's question of what justice means when the law itself causes harm.
