Book 3: True and False Happiness Book III, Part VI af 82 · 2 min. til at læse delen
In VI, the speaker argues that fame often rests on error, reaches only part of the world, and adds nothing to a wise person’s conscience. Noble birth likewise supplies no personal excellence, though it places an obligation on descendants to match their ancestors’ virtue.
Hvad sker der?
- The speaker cites a tragic poet to show how reputation can inflate pride.
- False praise brings shame, while deserved praise adds nothing to goodness measured by inner conviction.
- Fame cannot reach every people, and popular favor lacks sound judgment and permanence.
- Inherited rank rests on ancestors’ achievements rather than the descendant’s own merit.
- The speaker grants noble birth one value: an obligation to maintain ancestral virtue.
