Book 4-resumé af The Aeneid

Book 4 af 12 · 34 min. til at læse bogen

In Book 4, Dido embraces her love for Aeneas, but Jupiter orders him to leave Carthage and pursue the land promised to his people. When her appeals fail and the Trojan fleet departs, she curses Aeneas and his descendants, then kills herself with his sword on a prepared pyre.

Hvad sker der?

  1. Anna encourages Dido to accept her passion, while the queen’s concern for Aeneas displaces her work on the city.
  2. Juno arranges a storm that brings Dido and Aeneas into a cave together, and Dido treats their union as marriage.
  3. After Hyarba complains, Jupiter sends Mercury to order Aeneas away, and Aeneas secretly prepares his fleet.
  4. Dido confronts Aeneas and sends Anna with further appeals, but he holds to the divine command despite his grief.
  5. Dido conceals her suicide plan behind supposed magical rites, while another warning from Mercury prompts Aeneas to sail before dawn.
  6. Dido curses the departing Trojans, stabs herself on the pyre, and dies as Iris releases her struggling soul.

I denne bog

Det skal du lægge mærke til

Aeneas presents departure as obedience rather than personal preference. His explanation directly opposes Dido’s understanding of their relationship and her demands that he stay.
