Who Eppie is
Eppie is a toddler whose arrival interrupts Silas Marner's lonely life in Raveloe. On a snowy New Year's Eve, she wanders through his open door and sleeps by the hearth. Silas first mistakes the gleam of her bright hair for his stolen gold.
He decides to keep the little girl, although he knows nothing about raising a child. He calls her Eppie after his mother and sister, whose name was Hephzibah.
Eppie and the others in the story
Eppie becomes the center of Silas's life, bringing noise, mess and care into his quiet cottage. She wanders into the fields, and Silas begins spending time outdoors with her instead of remaining shut away. His daily routine changes as he learns to put a child's needs before his old habits.
Dolly Winthrop helps Silas learn the practical work of caring for Eppie. She teaches him about keeping a small child clean and explains why Eppie should be christened. Through this care, Eppie's arrival connects Silas more closely with a neighbor willing to help.
