On Benefits-journal: 9 skriveoplæg og øvelser
by Seneca · 9 morgen- og aftenprompter · en 7-dages plan · print eller gem som PDF
In On Benefits, Seneca asks how to give, receive and repay kindness well, and why goodwill matters more than the gift. This journal turns his nine key ideas into a morning prompt, an evening prompt and one thing to try today, with a 7-day plan to start.
Give without keeping accounts
Do one kind thing today for someone who cannot repay you.
Dag 2Gratitude begins with receiving gladly
The next time someone offers you something today, say a full thank-you instead of 'you shouldn't have'.
Dag 3Give promptly and protect dignity
Answer one waiting request for help today, and never mention it again.
Dag 4Generosity sometimes means saying no
Before you say yes today, ask: is this necessary, useful or only pleasant?
Dag 5Kindness is not limited by rank
Thank someone today whose work usually goes unnoticed.
Dag 6Repay with goodwill rather than haste
Recall one old kindness someone did you, and tell them what it meant.
Dag 7Keep kindness free of bitterness
Let go of one old grudge about a favour, given or owed.

9 idéer, hver med prompts
1. Give without keeping accounts
Seneca asks givers to look at their own part in ingratitude: careless choices, delays, grumbling and hints of repayment. A gift should not work like a loan.
- Morgen
- Whom can I help today without expecting anything back?
- Aften
- Did I keep score today on anything I gave?
- Prøv i dag
- Do one kind thing today for someone who cannot repay you.
2. The benefit lies in goodwill
Money, a house or an office is only the outward sign of a benefit. The real gift is the goodwill in the giver's mind, and it is not lost when the thing is lost.
- Morgen
- What goodwill can I show today, whatever I have to give?
- Aften
- Whose goodwill did I receive today, even if the gift was small?
- Prøv i dag
- Write a short note thanking someone for their intention, not for the object.
3. Give promptly and protect dignity
Give as you would like to receive: willingly, quickly, and without making the other person beg. After giving, stay silent about it.
- Morgen
- Is there a request I have been slow to answer?
- Aften
- Did I make anyone feel small today while helping them?
- Prøv i dag
- Answer one waiting request for help today, and never mention it again.
4. Generosity sometimes means saying no
Good intentions do not make every gift wise. Necessary things come first, then useful ones, then pleasant ones, and some requests are kinder to refuse.
- Morgen
- Is there a request I should kindly refuse today?
- Aften
- Did I give something today just to please, when it did not help?
- Prøv i dag
- Before you say yes today, ask: is this necessary, useful or only pleasant?
5. Gratitude begins with receiving gladly
Receiving is part of generosity. Accept with open pleasure and you already return something, because the giver hoped to make you glad.
- Morgen
- Can I accept help today without embarrassment?
- Aften
- How did I receive kindness today: gladly, or by brushing it off?
- Prøv i dag
- The next time someone offers you something today, say a full thank-you instead of 'you shouldn't have'.
6. Kindness is not limited by rank
A servant who goes beyond duty out of affection gives a real benefit, and children can give more than their parents gave them. Virtue is open to everyone.
- Morgen
- Whose kindness might I overlook today because of their position?
- Aften
- Who helped me today in a way that went beyond their job?
- Prøv i dag
- Thank someone today whose work usually goes unnoticed.
7. Good deeds have their own reward
Generosity and gratitude are worth choosing for themselves, not for profit. The gods need nothing from us and keep giving; giving only to get something back misses the point.
- Morgen
- What good can I do today that no one will ever repay?
- Aften
- Did I expect a reward today for something good I did?
- Prøv i dag
- Do one good deed today that no one will know was yours.
8. Repay with goodwill rather than haste
Matching a friend's goodwill matters more than matching the size of a gift. Rushing to repay, just to be free of a debt, is a kind of ingratitude.
- Morgen
- Whose kindness am I still carrying, and how can I honour it?
- Aften
- Did I repay anyone today out of goodwill, or out of a wish to be even?
- Prøv i dag
- Recall one old kindness someone did you, and tell them what it meant.
9. Keep kindness free of bitterness
Seneca ends with the heart: give promptly, kindly and quietly; receive gladly and remember. Goodwill matters more than goods.
- Morgen
- What would make my giving kinder today, not just larger?
- Aften
- Is there a gift I still resent giving, or a favour I resent owing?
- Prøv i dag
- Let go of one old grudge about a favour, given or owed.
