Who Zhang Fei is
Zhang Fei enters the story as a butcher and wine seller when the government calls for volunteers against the Yellow Turbans. He joins Liu Bei and Guan Yu, bringing great strength and a temper that quickly rises against unfair treatment. When their service earns little reward, he is ready to rage at the officials who slight them.
Zhang Fei and the others in the story
In the peach garden behind his farm, Zhang Fei swears brotherhood with Liu Bei and Guan Yu. The three promise to live and fight together, serve the country, and protect the people. Their bond places personal loyalty at the center of a world filled with rival armies and shifting alliances.
His impatience also appears when Liu Bei repeatedly visits the absent scholar Zhuge Liang. Zhang Fei grumbles that the scholar should be summoned with a rope, but Liu Bei scolds him.
What Zhang Fei wants
Zhang Fei wants to stand by Liu Bei and meet injustice with action rather than patience. At Changban, he holds a bridge alone and roars so fiercely that the pursuing soldiers draw back. The moment shows how his strength and loyalty work together under the pressure of battle.
