Who Freddy Eynsford Hill is
Freddy Eynsford Hill belongs to the family sheltering from the rain when the play opens in Covent Garden. His mother is Mrs Eynsford Hill, and Clara is his sister.
He later appears among the guests at Mrs Higgins's home, where Eliza faces her first social test. He is a gentleman with little money, and he is easily charmed.
Freddy Eynsford Hill and the others in the story
Freddy is taken with Eliza, whose carefully trained accent now sounds almost perfect. Her conversation, however, draws on family stories and expressions that do not fit the polite gathering.
When Eliza uses a rough expression that shocks the room, Freddy takes it as the latest fashion in talk. His response gives the scene comedy while Shaw shows that belonging involves more than a polished accent.
