Who Smee is
He is round and good-natured, and one of his ordinary tasks is mending spectacles.
That small detail gives him a different presence from his elegant, cruel captain. The pirates have their own odd tenderness, even though their captain is truly dangerous.
Smee and the others in the story
Smee serves Hook as his bosun and follows him with more loyalty than he can explain.
Smee's good nature sits beside the danger that Hook brings to the island. His place in the crew brings cheerfulness into the same company as Hook's cruelty and vanity.
