Who Gregor Samsa is

Gregor Samsa supports his parents and his younger sister through his work as a travelling salesman. When he wakes transformed into an insect-like creature, he struggles to leave his bed and fears his employer's anger.

His body changes, but his thoughts remain closely tied to work, duty, and the people he loves. He understands the voices outside his bedroom, yet his own altered speech no longer makes sense to them.

What Gregor Samsa wants

Gregor wants to meet his family's needs, despite disliking the exhausting journeys and demands of his job. After his transformation, his wish to protect them clashes with his growing need for their care.

Gregor Samsa and the others in the story

His younger sister, Grete Samsa, initially brings him food and tries to discover what he can eat. Gregor hides to spare her the sight of his body, making even their moments of care uneasy.

His mother feels both love for her son and distress at his appearance. As the family adjusts to losing his wages, Gregor listens from his room while others make decisions around him.

Spørgsmål

What kind of insect does Gregor Samsa become?

Gregor becomes an insect-like creature, but Kafka gives him no precise species. Calling him a cockroach is more definite than the story allows.

Why does Gregor Samsa transform?

The story does not explain why Gregor transforms. It follows his changed daily life and his family's response instead.

How is Gregor Samsa related to Grete?

Gregor is Grete Samsa's older brother. She initially cares for him as new responsibilities fall on the household.
