In Chapter 5, Cosette goes alone to a forest spring at night, fearing the Thénardier more than the darkness, and unknowingly loses a coin while drawing water. Exhausted by the heavy bucket, she struggles toward home until an unknown man takes its handle, and she feels no fear of him.
Hvad sker der?
- Cosette leaves the village lights behind, but fear of the darkness makes her turn back.
- Imagining the Thénardier’s anger, she reverses direction again and runs into the forest toward the spring.
- She fills her bucket and unknowingly drops the fifteen-sou coin from her apron pocket into the water.
- Overwhelmed by exhaustion and terror, she sits down, then counts aloud to regain awareness of her surroundings.
- She carries the heavy bucket in short stages, fearing punishment for her slow return.
- After she cries out to God, an unknown man silently lifts the bucket’s handle, and she is not frightened.
