Chapter 4-resumé af Hard Times
Chapter 4 af 37 · Book 1: Sowing · 10 min. til at læse chapter
In Chapter 4, Josiah Bounderby boasts about overcoming childhood poverty while Mr. Gradgrind worries that his children's interest in the circus exposes a failure in their education. Bounderby blames Cecilia Jupe's influence and urges her removal from school, while Louisa's response to his kiss reveals her strong dislike of his attention.
Hvad sker der?
- Bounderby tells Mrs. Gradgrind that he rises from neglect and poverty entirely through his own efforts.
- Mr. Gradgrind brings Louisa and Thomas home, and their mother scolds them for looking at the circus.
- Gradgrind and Bounderby blame imagination, then suspect Cecilia Jupe of encouraging the children's curiosity.
- Gradgrind agrees to send Cecilia away and asks Bounderby to accompany him into town.
- Before leaving, Bounderby kisses Louisa, who repeatedly rubs her cheek and tells Thomas he may cut the spot out.
