Who Ophelia is

Ophelia is a young woman at the Danish royal court, where her father, Polonius, serves as an adviser. Hamlet has courted her, and she believes that his earlier expressions of love are sincere.

Her place in the story brings personal affection into contact with the court's suspicions. As Hamlet behaves strangely, Ophelia faces demands from others while having little power to choose for herself.

Ophelia and the others in the story

Polonius believes Hamlet's love for Ophelia may explain the prince's unsettling conduct. Yet he also warns his daughter against the relationship, placing family demands alongside her own belief in Hamlet.

Her brother Laertes warns that a prince's marriage may be governed by state interests. Hamlet's increasingly harsh treatment leaves her caught between affection, obedience to her family, and the suspicions surrounding him.
