Hvad sker der?

1. Cold and penniless, Étienne walks from Marchiennes toward Montsou and approaches fires on a mine’s spoil heap.
2. An old carter tells him that the Voreux has no work for engine drivers.
3. Their conversation reveals factory closures, reduced production, and hunger throughout the district.
4. During a mechanical stoppage, the carter identifies himself as Bonnemort and describes his injuries, working life, and family’s mining deaths.
5. Bonnemort describes the Company’s wealth but cannot identify its owners, explaining that Monsieur Hennebeau only manages it.
6. After Bonnemort returns to work, Étienne decides to seek any available job despite his fear of the mine.
