Chapter 48 af 57 · 7 min. til at læse chapter
In Chapter 48, Bathsheba hears that Troy has drowned, faints into Boldwood’s arms, and returns home unwilling to accept the report. A newspaper account and Troy’s recovered clothes weaken her certainty that he survives, while the hair inside his watch draws her thoughts back to Fanny.
Hvad sker der?
- During Troy’s absence, Bathsheba expects his return to threaten her farm tenancy and leave her poor.
- In Casterbridge, she overhears a report of his drowning, collapses, and receives Boldwood’s help.
- Bathsheba refuses Boldwood’s transport offers, drives home alone, and rejects Liddy’s suggestion of mourning clothes.
- On Monday, a newspaper witness account and Troy’s recovered clothes weaken her belief that he remains alive.
- Bathsheba considers whether Troy deliberately follows Fanny into death, then preserves Fanny’s hair rather than burning it.
