1. During a sudden storm, the Demeter enters Whitby harbor with a corpse at its wheel, and an enormous dog leaps ashore.
2. Officials discover the captain’s crucifix and written account, while Mr. S. F. Billington takes possession of boxes containing earth.
3. The captain’s log recounts missing crew members, reports of a strange figure, and the mate’s desperate leap into the sea.
4. Alone aboard, the captain sees the presence himself and resolves to secure himself to the wheel with something it cannot touch.
5. Mina records Lucy’s sleepwalking during the storm and worries about Jonathan’s whereabouts.
6. At the captain’s funeral, Lucy remains distressed; Mina reports Mr. Swales’s death and watches a dog become terrified beside their seat.
