Who Kit Carson is
Kit Carson appears as American soldiers, traders and settlers arrive in greater numbers in the Southwest. He is a real historical figure whom Cather brings into the novel's changing frontier. Rather than presenting him as a swaggering hero, she shows a modest, soft-spoken man.
Kit Carson and the others in the story
Carson becomes a loyal friend of Jean Marie Latour, the French bishop working in New Mexico. He treats Latour gently, giving their friendship a warmth that contrasts with the pressures surrounding them. Yet Carson also belongs to the forces remaking the country, bringing suffering to Native peoples whom Latour comes to respect.
This gives the friendship an edge of sadness without taking away its warmth. Through Carson, the novel brings personal loyalty alongside the painful changes taking place across the Southwest.
