Chapter 6-resumé af Billy Budd
Chapter 6 af 49 · 3 min. til at læse chapter
In Chapter 6, Captain Vere emerges as a devoted reader whose books confirm his private beliefs and strengthen his resistance to new social and political ideas. His serious manner and habit of citing ancient history also separate him from fellow officers, who respect his abilities but find him poor company.
Hvad sker der?
- Captain Vere takes a carefully chosen library to sea and uses quiet hours to read history, biography, and practical philosophy.
- Books confirm private thoughts that conversation fails to support, helping him establish firm convictions.
- He rejects new social and political theories because he considers them unworkable and harmful to human peace.
- Some fellow officers admire his naval skill but privately criticize his bookish manner.
- His serious speech and casual historical references overlook the limits of his companions’ reading.
