Part 9-resumé af Beowulf

Part 9 af 43 · 4 min. til at læse part

In IX Unferth Taunts Beowulf, Unferth questions Beowulf’s courage through a swimming story, but Beowulf counters with his own account of survival and attacks Unferth’s conduct. Beowulf promises resistance to Grendel, receives Wealhtheow’s welcome, and gains Hrothgar’s trust as the king leaves him responsible for the hall.

Hvad sker der?

  1. Jealous of Beowulf’s reputation, Unferth claims that Breca defeats him at swimming and predicts defeat against Grendel.
  2. Beowulf accuses Unferth of drunkenness and says the swimmers keep a childhood promise, staying together until currents separate them.
  3. Beowulf describes killing attacking sea creatures and reaching Finland after his escape.
  4. He accuses Unferth of killing his brothers and says Grendel has little reason to fear the Danes.
  5. Hrothgar takes heart, and Wealhtheow welcomes Beowulf with a cup and thanks God for help.
  6. Beowulf declares his resolve to succeed or die, and Hrothgar leaves him in charge of the hall.
