Who Hrothgar is

Hrothgar rules the Danes through a long and successful reign before Grendel brings terror to his hall. He builds Heorot to gather his warriors and reward their loyalty with rings and treasure. The hall gives visible form to the warmth and order his kingship promises.

Yet Grendel's repeated attacks expose a limit to the old king's power. For twelve years, Hrothgar cannot stop the creature, and Heorot stands empty after dark.

What Hrothgar wants

Hrothgar wants his people safe and his hall restored to a place of fellowship. When Beowulf offers to face Grendel, he listens with weary hope and welcomes the young warrior. He entrusts Heorot to Beowulf, something he says he has never done for anyone before.

Hrothgar and the others in the story

Hrothgar's bond with Beowulf begins with a kindness shown to the hero's father, Ecgtheow. Years earlier, he settles Ecgtheow's feud by paying compensation for a killing. Beowulf comes partly to repay that help, bringing an old obligation into the present.

Hrothgar also offers the young hero counsel about the dangers of pride and success. His warning that strength fades with age places wisdom beside the physical courage Beowulf displays.
