Who Enobarbus is

Enobarbus is a plain-speaking soldier whose bluntness gives him a distinct voice among rulers, lovers and messengers. As Antony's trusted officer and close friend, he watches the tensions between Egypt and Rome with clear eyes. His dry humour brings comedy into a story where personal feelings carry public consequences.

Enobarbus and the others in the story

Enobarbus sees Cleopatra's tricks, yet his understanding of her does not prevent him from admiring her. Speaking to Roman friends, he describes her appearance on a barge on the river Cydnus. He suggests that Antony can never be fully content with anyone else after seeing her.

When Cleopatra insists on joining Antony's forces at sea, Enobarbus joins the officers who protest. They know that Antony's strength lies on land, while Caesar has strong ships and fighters. His friendship with Antony leaves room for criticism, especially when love begins to shape military decisions.
