From deckhand to officer and captain, he faces storms, shipwreck, ice, hunger and hard masters. His memoir brings you close to the work of sailing, where a captain's whims can make an already dangerous voyage harder.

Across the Atlantic, the account enters darker waters: Nettelbeck serves on ships carrying enslaved Africans to the Caribbean. His story demands an uncomfortable look at his own part in that trade. Back in Kolberg, the focus turns to citizenship and duty as French forces threaten his home town in 1807.

What you'll discover

A sailor's hard lessons – Meet a working seaman whose progress depends on facing hunger, danger and demanding captains.

The Atlantic's troubling history – Confront the slave trade through the account of a man who takes part in it.

Life in a Baltic port – Explore Kolberg, where salt works, shipping and the sea shape the town's daily life.

A home under threat – Follow Nettelbeck into the defence of Kolberg as French armies push across Prussia.

Duty without easy comfort – Consider a life measured by work, keeping one's word and standing by one's people.

Perfect for readers who value first-hand voices, true sea stories, and Prussian and Napoleonic history over polished prose or moral comfort.

Open the first page and meet the boy from Kolberg who wants to go to sea.
