About this book

What if desire has a history that begins long before puberty—and follows no single fixed path?

In Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality, Sigmund Freud asks how human desire takes shape. The founder of psychoanalysis argues that sexuality does not simply appear at puberty. He traces its roots through the body and mind, from early childhood toward adult love, questioning what people call normal along the way.

The Sexual Aberrations explores unusual forms of desire. The second essay examines infantile sexuality, while The Transformations of Puberty considers how scattered childhood drives come together. First published in 1905, this short treatise offers a concentrated encounter with Freud’s arguments. Some claims are disputed by later science; their place in the history of ideas remains worth exploring.

In short

What if the sexual drive does not wake at puberty, but begins at the breast? And what if the odd and the ordinary in desire come from the same roots?

Tre saggi sulla teoria della sessualità by Sigmund Freud, the cover

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1

Desire and its object are separate things

Freud opens by testing what most people believe. Popular opinion says the sexual drive is missing in childhood, wakes at puberty, and pulls one sex toward the other. He calls this picture full of errors. The sexual object is the person who attracts, and the sexual aim is the act toward which the drive presses.

What is Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality about?

It is about how the human sexual drive develops. Freud examines variations in desire, the sexual life of children, and the changes of puberty, and argues that adult sexuality grows from childhood parts and can be understood through them.

What does Freud mean by libido?

Libido is the name Freud gives to the force of the sexual drive, which he compares to hunger as a need. He treats it as a variable amount of energy that attaches to objects and can be redirected.

What is infantile sexuality in Freud's theory?

It is the claim that sexual pleasure begins in infancy, tied to the body's erogenous zones, such as the lips in sucking. It is scattered and autoerotic at first and only later gathers into adult sexual life.
