A dying inspector leaves a strange clue
The story opens in the Paris office of Prefect of Police M. Desmalions. Inspector Vérot staggers in, pale and soaked in sweat, and says that two murders are planned for tonight. He leaves a sealed envelope and a small cardboard box, then wanders off in a daze.
He collapses in a dressing room behind a screen, where nobody thinks to look. The Prefect opens the envelope and finds only a blank sheet of paper. The box holds half a bar of chocolate, marked with the bites of four upper teeth and five lower ones. Everyone expects Vérot to walk back in at any moment.
