About this book
How honest is a town when a sack of gold puts its proudest claim to the test?
In Mark Twain's The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg, and Other Stories, a stranger brings temptation to a town proud of its honesty. He leaves gold and a letter at the home of bank cashier Edward Richards and his wife, Mary. A fortune awaits the person who once helped him. As news spreads, Hadleyburg's good name faces a test it cannot simply avoid.
The title story anchors this collection of short fiction and sketches, where sharp satire meets tenderness, humor, and plain argument. Edward and Mary share hopes and fears about the gold, while Reverend Burgess is drawn into a public meeting about who deserves it. Beyond Hadleyburg, Twain's shorter pieces move between the comic and the serious, asking uncomfortable questions about human nature.

A proud town receives a mysterious sack
Hadleyburg is known across the region as the most honest town around. For three generations it has raised its children away from temptation, so that honesty becomes part of them. The town loves its good name more than anything it owns.
A passing stranger feels insulted there, and he spends a year planning a revenge that will hurt every person in town. One night he carries a heavy sack to the home of the old bank cashier, Edward Richards, and leaves it with Mrs. Richards. An attached letter says the sack holds forty thousand dollars in gold for the kind man who once gave him twenty dollars and a few wise words.
