About this book
When the law can take a life, how much room is there for doubt?
In Only Seven Were Hanged, Stuart Martin brings crime, a trial and the question of guilt into the shadow of the gallows. Capital punishment gives the mystery its weight: the search for truth matters not only because a crime demands an answer, but because a sentence can cost a life.
The book belongs to the early twentieth century detective tradition, where clues and questions of guilt draw the reader onward. Testimony, proof and human judgment stand beside the troubling possibility that a secret can survive a trial. As you read, the question is not simply who is guilty, but whether the law reaches the truth.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A club of crime lovers meets on Christmas Eve
The Clue Club is small, exclusive and devoted to one thing, the study of crime and clues. Those who belong are lawyers, doctors, actors, artists, politicians and novelists, plus one clergyman. No policeman or detective belongs.
On Christmas Eve the club gathers for dinner by a crackling fire while snow falls outside. A criminal court judge presides, wearing a face so unreadable that juries and lawyers have often misjudged it. Relics fill the room, including a model of a gallows and a black bludgeon dug from the Thames mud, said to have belonged to a barbarian called Kartarus. The previous meeting voted to keep the death penalty as a warning to wrongdoers.
