About this book
What does power cost a man who wants wealth, rank, and command?
In Sir Henry Morgan, Buccaneer, Cyrus Townsend Brady places a bold, calculating sea raider at the center of an adventure on the Spanish Main. Henry Morgan wants more than treasure. His fierce ambition drives a story where leadership, wealth, and power are bound together.
Around him lie the Caribbean coasts and waters of Spanish America, where gold and silver move toward Europe. English, French, and Dutch raiders hunt Spanish treasure. Real raids give the plot its backbone, while Morgan’s hunger for command raises a harder question: what is the price of ruthless ambition?

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A governor with ten minutes to escape
The story opens in Jamaica in 1685. Sir Henry Morgan, once the most feared buccaneer of the Caribbean, is now acting governor, and his wife has just died upstairs. Brady paints him as thin, cruel and fearless, a man who looks out of place in his fine clothes.
Two officers, Hawxherst and Bradley, arrive with an order for his arrest. King Charles is dead, King James rules, and the new governor wants Morgan sent to England. Hawxherst gives Morgan ten minutes to decide whether to surrender. Morgan smashes a decanter on Hawxherst's head, makes young Bradley call off the guard, and leaves the house burning behind him.
