About this book

What is art worth when you have to pawn your clothes to keep creating?

In the Latin Quarter of 1840s Paris, four friends live on talent, borrowed money and stubborn hope. Rodolphe writes poetry, Marcel paints, Schaunard makes music and Colline treasures learning. In Henri Murger’s linked scenes, they dodge landlords, share what little they have and keep artistic ambition alive through cold rooms and empty pockets.

Love brings its own troubles. Rodolphe forms a stormy bond with Mimi, a young flower maker who loves pleasure and comfort. Marcel cannot stay away from lively Musette. Between quarrels, clever stunts and sudden tenderness, Bohemians of the Latin Quarter asks whether an artist can stay faithful to a vision while finding work that pays.

What you’ll discover

  • Friendship against empty pockets Meet four friends whose shared habits and small rituals make poverty less lonely.

What is Bohemians of the Latin Quarter about?

It follows four poor young artists, a poet, a painter, a musician and a philosopher, in 1840s Paris. Through linked scenes it shows their friendships, money troubles, love affairs and struggle to make art.

Is Bohemians of the Latin Quarter the basis for La Boheme?

Yes. Puccini's opera La Boheme draws on Murger's book, using characters such as Rodolphe, Marcel, Schaunard, Colline, Mimi and Musette. The opera is more compact and more tragic, while the book is looser and more comic.

What does bohemian mean in this book?

Murger uses it for artists living outside normal comfort and rules, chasing a creative dream with little money. His book helped give the word its modern meaning of an unconventional, artistic way of life.
