In short
Ruth Fielding and the Gypsies is a girls' adventure novel by Alice B. Emerson, the name that stands on the whole Ruth Fielding series.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A river rescue brings a strange friend
The story opens at the Red Mill, where the grinding stones shake every board and the air is thick with dust. Ruth Fielding sits under a tree with her lame friend Mercy Curtis, who gets about on two canes she calls her airplanes. Uncle Jabez Potter, the miserly miller, needs help carrying four sacks of flour across the Lumano to Tim Lakeby's store. His hired man Ben has not come back from town.
Ruth offers to row, and the old man scoffs that it is no job for a girl. Aunt Alvirah, who hobbles about moaning over her back and her bones, takes Ruth's side. At last he gives in. The boat is a stained, waterlogged tub, and the oars are heavy ash. Ruth rowed in the first eight at Briarwood Hall, and she pulls hard, but the current tugs at the blades as if something below had hold of them.
