About this book
What is love worth in a world where duty rules your choices and honour can cost your life?
In Red Eve, H. Rider Haggard brings adventure and romance to fourteenth-century England. Knights, feuds, abbeys and sudden violence shape the world of a love that meets stubborn opposition. Birth and duty carry great weight here. Choosing whom to love means facing a society where a person's life is never entirely their own.
Faithful friends stand beside love in this tale of daring and loyalty. Haggard explores the strength of bonds under strain, in a land ruled by great lords and church power. Over this medieval world hangs the shadow of the Black Death, giving questions of honour, devotion and survival a deeper urgency.

A medieval England of hard choices
Haggard sets his tale in the later Middle Ages, when England was a place of manor houses, village churches, great lords and church power. Society was built on loyalty, birth and duty, and a person's choices were never wholly their own. Families were bound to land and to overlords, and a quarrel between two houses could shake a whole district.
This is the kind of world in which Haggard likes to place his heroes. He sets private feeling against public rule, so that love and friendship are tested by pressure from family, rank and faith. Readers of his other books will know the method. He chooses a vivid age, gives it danger, and lets courage show itself in action rather than in long speeches.
